These cords are called "universal" because the same basic cable design works across an enormous range of electronics: desktop computers, monitors, printers, audio receivers, laptop power bricks, and countless other devices that share a common power input style. Rather than each manufacturer designing a proprietary cord, most equipment makers rely on these standardized connectors, which is why a single universal cable can often serve multiple devices in your home or office.


Why the Connector Type Matters

While the plug that goes into your wall outlet is usually consistent, the connector that plugs into your device varies. Getting this part wrong is the most common mistake people make when shopping for universal cables. Here are the most frequent connector types you'll encounter:

  • C13 connector: This is the most common connector type, recognizable by its rectangular shape with rounded corners. It's used on desktop computers, monitors, and many other electronics with grounded, three-prong power inputs.

  • Coiling excess cord tightly. Tightly coiled cords generate more heat under load and can degrade the insulation faster over time.
